About the Tour

Besieged but Never Beaten is a guided walking tour exploring Newark’s vital role during the English Civil Wars. Focusing on the dramatic events of the 17th century, the tour reveals how the town’s inhabitants endured repeated sieges, constant threat and extraordinary hardship.

Led by a knowledgeable guide, the walk tells the story of a town under pressure — dodging cannonball fire, facing outbreaks of plague, and surviving daily life in a fortified stronghold.

What Will You Explore?

During the Besieged but Never Beaten tour, you will:

  • Visit key Civil War sites around Newark
  • Explore how the town was defended and attacked during siege
  • Learn how civilians lived through bombardment and disease
  • See places still marked by the conflict, including musket‑scarred walls at Newark Castle
