About the Tour
The Civil War Deep Dive Tour is an extended version of our Besieged but Never Beaten walking tour, designed for those who want to explore Newark’s Civil War history in greater depth.
Focusing on the seventeenth century, the tour reveals how Newark’s inhabitants lived through siege, bombardment and the constant threat of disease, while also examining the town’s wider defensive landscape beyond the immediate town centre.
What Will You Explore?
During the Civil War Deep Dive Tour, you will:
- Visit key Civil War sites in and around Newark
- Explore areas connected to the town’s defences, including Millgate and the Queen’s Sconce
- Learn how civilians survived cannon fire, siege conditions and outbreaks of plague
- See places still bearing the marks of conflict, from musket‑scarred walls to locations linked to large‑scale explosions
- Gain a deeper understanding of Newark’s strategic importance during the British Civil Wars
This longer route allows for a more detailed and immersive exploration of both the town and its surrounding landscape.
